Mace Tour

From April 28th to May 3rd, the Mace of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories was away
on a tour to the Mackenzie Delta communities of Sachs Harbour, Ulukhaktok, Paulatuk, Tuktoyaktuk and
Inuvik. The tour was conducted by Shane Thompson, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly ; Glen Rutland,
Clerk of the Legislative Assembly ; and Floyd Powder, Sergeant-at-Arms.

The Speaker, Clerk and Sergeant-at-Arms explained their Roles as well as the functioning of a Consensus
Government to audiences of these remote and isolated communities. Community members were
provided with a detailed description of their Mace and had the opportunity to take a close look.

The Mace Tour travelled by the commercial aircraft ‘’Twin Otter’’, as well as by truck on the Inuvik to
Tuktoyaktuk Highway. The Mace travelled to the Arctic Ocean.

Close coordination was made prior to departure with the RCMP. The Mace was stored at the RCMP
detachments in the communities in which the Mace Tour overnighted.

A particular highlight was engaging Youth Parliamentarians (Grade 9-10) who, the week prior, were in
Yellowknife learning the role of Members of the Legislative Assembly. These youth stepped up and
introduced their community and fellow students to the members of the Mace Tour.

Thank you Floyd for sharing this amazing initiative!
